Modify settings for VMware vSphere VM groups

After you configure backups for VMware vSphere VMs, you can modify VM group settings to change which VMs are protected and how backups run.

You can create additional VM groups for a hypervisor if you need different backup settings for different sets of VMs.

Go to the VM group

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtual machines.

  2. On the VM groups tab, click the VM group.

Configure VMware-specific settings

Use these settings to control how VMware vSphere VM backups run for the VM group.

  • Transport mode: Select the transport mode, which controls how backup data is read during VMware backups and restores.

    • Auto (recommended in most cases): Automatically selects the best available transport mode.

    • HotAdd: Use when your environment supports HotAdd and you want backups to run through virtual access nodes.

    • Other modes (SAN, NBD, NBDSSL, NAS): Use only when your environment requires a specific configuration or does not support HotAdd.

  • Validate VM backups: Validate VM backups after they complete.

  • Auto detect VM owner: Automatically assign VM owners during VM discovery based on vCenter roles and privileges.

Use this option when you want end users to be able to view or restore VM data without being manually assigned as VM owners.

Save changes

  1. Review your changes.

  2. Click Save.

Changes apply to future backups.
