Auto-detecting VM owners for restores

Auto-detect VM owners to automatically assign VM ownership during VM discovery based on permissions in your virtualization platform. This can reduce manual owner assignment and help the right users view or restore VM data.

Supported workloads

Workload How VM owners are assigned
Azure Virtual Machines VM owners are assigned during VM discovery based on Azure roles and permissions for users and user groups that are also defined in Commvault. During discovery, accounts from Commvault and Azure are matched by email address.
VMware vSphere VM owners are assigned during VM discovery based on vCenter roles and privileges for users and user groups that are also defined in Commvault.

How it works

When VM owner detection is enabled, Commvault assigns VM owners during VM discovery.

  • VM owners are assigned only during discovery for streaming and snapshot-based backups.

  • VM owners are not modified by backup copy or auxiliary copy operations.

Depending on the permissions users have in the source platform, they can view VM data or restore VM data without being assigned as VM owners manually.

Note

When you enable VM owner detection, VM discovery might take longer.

Requirements

  • Single sign-on must be enabled on the vCenter server.

  • The relevant users or user groups must be defined in both vCenter and Commvault.

  • Assign permissions for VM owners in Commvault.

Requirements for Commvault

  • Users or user groups defined in Azure must also be defined in Commvault.

  • Assign permissions for VM owners in Commvault. See Assigning Permissions to Owners.

Requirements for Azure

  • Users must have a role that indicates access to the VM. By default, the Owner or Contributor roles are treated as VM owners.

  • Azure AD applications used for Commvault authentication must have the following Microsoft Graph API permission:

  • Type: Application

  • Permission: Directory.Read.All (This requires admin consent.)

  • For Azure MSI, an Azure AD admin must add the API permission using PowerShell.

Enable auto-detect VM owner

  1. Go to the hypervisor.

  2. On the Configuration tab, in the Options section, enable the Auto detect VM owner toggle key.
