System Requirements for Proxmox VE Access Nodes

Plan the Proxmox VE deployment to identify where to install the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) and related components. These components support guest VM backup and restore operations, data movement, and application-consistent snapshots.

Deployment Planning

A Proxmox VE deployment can include the following components:

  • Install the VSA on the physical node of the Proxmox cluster so that it can serve as an access node. A VSA access node manages backup and restore operations for guest VMs in your environment, eliminating the need to install agents on guest VMs.

  • The VSA must be deployed on all Proxmox nodes of the cluster. Multiple VSA access nodes enable load distribution and load balancing to improve the backup and restore performance.

    Note

A Proxmox node with PCI passthrough or GPU passthrough cannot be configured as an access node.

  • You can deploy MediaAgents on physical machines or VMs to manage data transmission between clients and backup media.

  • Install the supported version of QEMU tools on guest VMs to create application-consistent snapshots.

Access Node and System Requirements

  • For Proxmox VE support, the VSA must be installed on a node in the Proxmox VE cluster.

  • Verify that your environment meets the following requirements:

    • Proxmox VE version 9.x, 8.x

    • Verify that at least 100 GB free disk space is available for installing the VSA.

    • A minimum of 4 GB RAM is required excluding the operating system and running applications.

  • The default port for the Proxmox web GUI is 8006.
