Restoring Exchange Mailboxes, Messages, and Public Folders to a Point in Time

Point-in-time restores are useful when you need to revert a mailbox to a state just before an undesired incident occurred in the mailbox.

You can restore messages to a specific date and time. To restore a mailbox or messages to a specific date and time while maintaining the folder structure, you must create a recovery point, and then restore the mailbox or messages from the recovery point.

Restoring Exchange Mailboxes, Mailbox Items, or Public Folders to a Specific Date and Time

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane,, go to Protect > Exchange.

    The Exchange page appears.

  2. On the Apps tab, click the Exchange app that contains the mailboxes, messages, or public folders that you want to recover.

    The Overview page of the app appears.

  3. In the Recovery points tile, select a date from the calendar, select a time, and then click Restore.

    Contents for all mailboxes in the Exchange app appear.

  4. From the list, select entire mailboxes, all public folders, or individual messages.

    You can use the Search bar to filter mailbox contents and find the items you want restore.

  5. At the top-left area of the page, click Restore.

    The Restore options tool appears.

  6. On the Destination tab, select the restore destination, and then click Next:

    • To restore to the original location: Leave Exchange and Restore the data to its original location selected.

    • To restore to another location: Leave Exchange selected, from the Exchange account list, select Restore the data to another location, and then specify the location for the restore:

      • To specify a different destination client for the restore, move the Restore to a different client toggle key to the right, and in the Destination client list, select an Exchange Online app.

      • To restore to another mailbox, in the Mailbox box, click Browse, select a mailbox or All Public Folders from the list, and then click Submit.

      • To restore to a specific folder location, in the Folder box, click Browse, select a folder from the list, and then click Submit.

    • To restore to a PST file: Select File Location, and then configure the restore destination:

      • From the Server list, select the server where the data will be restored.

      • From the File type list, select PST.

      • Beside the Path list, click Browse, select a folder from the list, and then click Save.

    • To restore to a different disk location: Select File Location, and then configure the restore destination:

      • From the Server list, select the server where the data will be restored.

      • From the File type list, select MSG.

      • Beside the Path list, click Browse, select a folder from the list, and then click Save.

    The Options tab appears.

  7. Specify which items to include in the restore, and then click Next. The options vary based on the type of restore destination you selected:

    • To not overwrite existing items, select Skip.

    • To overwrite existing items, select Unconditionally overwrite.

    • To launch the restore job using a specific access node, in the Access node list, select the access node to use.

    • To include deleted items in the restore, select Include deleted items.

    • To restore to the email address selected for restore, select Match destination user based on the email address. If you leave this option cleared, the user is matched based on the user GUID.

    • To restore the data as a stub, select Restore as stubs.

    • To detect and replace stubs with restored messages, select Stub rehydration.

    • To restore a large data set to multiple PST files, select the Limit PST size to check box, and then enter the maximum size for the PST files. You cannot enter a value that is greater than 45 GB.

    The Review tab appears.

  8. Review the items you selected for restore, and then click Submit to start the restore operation.

    The Summary tab appears.

  9. Click Close.

Creating a Recovery Point for Exchange Mailbox Restores

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Exchange.

    The Exchange page appears.

  2. Click an app.

    The Overview tab for the app appears.

  3. On the Monitoring tab, select the Recovery Points tab, and then click Create recovery point.

    The Create recovery point dialog box appears.

  4. Under Mailbox, click the Browse button, select the mailboxes you want to create a recovery point for, and then click Add.

  5. In the calendar, select a date.

  6. Under the calendar, select a time.

  7. To use a different index server, under Update Index Server, select another index server from the list.

  8. Click Create.

    A message displays the recovery point job ID.

    By default, the recovery point expires in 30 days.

Restoring from a Recovery Point for Exchange Mailboxes, Mailbox Items, or Public Folders

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Exchange.

    The Exchange page appears.

  2. Click an app.

    The Overview tab for the app appears.

  3. On the Montoring tab, on the Recovery points tab, in the row for the recovery point, click the action button action_button, and then restore an entire mailbox or individual mailbox items:

    • To restore an entire mailbox, select Restore > Restore mailbox.

    • To restore individual mailbox items, select Restore > Restore messages, and then specify the items to restore:

      1. From the list of mailbox contents, select the items you want to restore. You can use the Search bar to filter mailbox contents and find the items you want restore.

      2. At the top-left area of the page, click Restore.

    The Restore options tool appears.

  4. On the Destination tab, select the restore destination, and then click Next:

    • To restore to the original location: Leave Exchange and Restore the data to its original location selected.

    • To restore to another location: Leave Exchange selected, from the Exchange account list, select Restore the data to another location, and then specify the location for the restore:

      • To specify a different destination client for the restore, move the Restore to a different client toggle key to the right, and in the Destination client list, select an Exchange Online app.

      • To restore to another mailbox, in the Mailbox box, click Browse, select a mailbox or All Public Folders from the list, and then click Submit.

      • To restore to a specific folder location, in the Folder box, click Browse, select a folder from the list, and then click Submit.

    • To restore to a PST file: Select File Location, and then configure the restore destination:

      • From the Server list, select the server where the data will be restored.

      • From the File type list, select PST.

      • Beside the Path list, click Browse, select a folder from the list, and then click Save.

    • To restore to a different disk location: Select File Location, and then configure the restore destination:

      • From the Server list, select the server where the data will be restored.

      • From the File type list, select MSG.

      • Beside the Path list, click Browse, select a folder from the list, and then click Save.

    The Options tab appears.

  5. Specify which items to include in the restore, and then click Next. The options vary based on the type of restore destination you selected:

    • To not overwrite existing items, select Skip.
