Selecting the Recursive Scan Method for the Windows File System Agent

There are some situations in which the recursive scan method is always used, including but not limited to the following situations:

  • When you back up FAT Volumes.

  • When files in a volume are configured to use Microsoft deduplication.

  • When there is a mount point within a volume.

  • When you enable access control on the client data.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > File System > backup_set.

  2. Right-click the appropriate subclient, and then click Properties.

The Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

  3. Click Advanced.

The Advanced Properties dialog box appears.

  4. On the Advanced Options tab, click Recursive Scan, and then select either or both of the following options based on your requirements:

    • To maintain the file access time during backups so that the access time is not modified at the time of backup, select the Preserve File Access Time check box. However, selecting this option increases the time that is required to complete a backup.

    • To back up files based on the state of the archive bit or on the file modification time, select the Check archive bit during backups check box.

When you select the Check archive bit during backups check box, the system resets the archive bit of every file it backs up.

      Note

If the back up is from a read-only location such as hardware snap, QSnap, VSS snap or NetApp mirror, Commvault recommends that you do not select this option as the system does not reset the Archive bit of the files after a back up which results in incremental backups to back up the unmodified files.

  5. Click OK.
