Can I back up the root volume on a UNIX file system using block-level backups?
Root volume (/) backups on UNIX file system are disabled for block-level backups by default. You can override the default behavior by adding the bForceFsckOnSnapBeforeMount and sEnableRootSnap additional settings, and setting the CVBF cache location to a different non-root volume. To move the COW files to another volume, configure the sCVBFSNAPPART additional setting.

To the client computer, add the bForceFsckOnSnapBeforeMount additional setting as shown in the following table.

Can I back up empty mount points using block-level backups?
No. If only empty mount points are present in the block-level subclient content, the backup operation fails.
If multiple mount points are present in the block-level subclient content and only some of the mount points contain data, then the backup operation skips the empty mount points. A critical event appears in the Event Viewer window of the CommCell Console indicating that no data was found.
Do block-level backups support device resizing?
Yes. Block-level backups support backup of block devices which have been resized, but the next backup job after the device change has occurred will be converted to a full backup job.
On block-level clients upgraded from version 10 to version 11 software, can I perform an Indexing Version 1 to Indexing Version 2 upgrade?
No. On block-level clients upgraded from version 10 to version 11 software, an upgrade from Indexing Version 1 to Indexing Version 2 is currently not supported.
Can I use tape library as media for block-level backup and restore operations?
Commvault supports block-level backups to a tape library. Live browse and file-level restore operations are not supported from a tape library. However, you can perform a volume-level restore operation to restore the entire data that is backed up from a tape library, to a similarly sized destination volume.
Why do the empty volumes that are skipped from backup operations still appear during a volume-level browse operation?
If the latest backup cycle skips an empty volume from backup operations, the skipped volume will still appear when you perform a volume-level browse operation. However, the skipped volume does not appear when you perform a file-level browse operation.
