Configuring Micro Pruning

For cloud storage configured with deduplication, micro pruning is enabled by default to ensure that data will be pruned from cloud storage, as soon as a backup job meets the retention rules, without sealing the corresponding deduplication database (DDB).

If the Enable Micro Pruning option was not enabled on the cloud storage before upgrading the MediaAgent, enable this option from the Mount Path Properties after upgrading the MediaAgent. This option will prune the deduplicated data from cloud storage without sealing the corresponding DDB.

You cannot perform micro pruning for a cloud storage that has WORM enabled. For cloud storage with WORM, you must use macro pruning. Macro pruning means the deletion of a job without the DDB.

Note:

If there are multiple MediaAgents configured to write to a cloud storage, the system automatically selects a preferred MediaAgent to prune the data from cloud storage.

The system automatically selects another MediaAgent to prune the data from cloud storage in the following cases:

• The device controller is disabled and not accessible.

• The device controller has no write access.

• The device controller is not configured to a mount path.

• The MediaAgent is offline for more than 24 hours.

In both these situations you can override the automatic selection, by setting a preferred MediaAgent to prune data, using the SetDeviceControllerProps qscript. For more information about this qscript, see SetDeviceControllerProps.

When all the MediaAgents that the mount path is shared with meet one or more of the above cases, the software fails to select a pruner MediaAgent and sends a No Pruner MA alert to the administrator users.

If a MediaAgent is provisioned on the cloud storage, and if that MediaAgent is shared on the mount path, then that MediaAgent is automatically picked as pruner MediaAgent by default.

Support

• This option will not be available for cloud storage products that do not support micro pruning.

• Micro pruning is not supported for combined storage tiers and archive storage classes.

Procedure

1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Storage Resources > Libraries >Cloud Storage Library.

2. Right-click the appropriate cloud storage mount path and then click Properties.

3. Click the Allocation Policy tab, select the Enable Micro Pruning check box.

   Note

   When this option is enabled, the pruning process could take a lot of time, if there are a number of backup jobs that meet the retention rules.

4. Click OK.
