Restoring VMs in Commvault helps you recover from data loss, system failure, or cyber incidents. You can restore to the original location or to a new environment.
How restore works
To restore any workload in Commvault, you:
-
Select a resource and recovery point
-
Choose a restore destination
-
Configure restore options
-
Run and validate the restore
For VMs:
-
You restore the entire VM, including disks and configuration
-
You can restore to the same or a different hypervisor
Restores use available recovery points created during backups. These recovery points represent consistent states of the VM at specific points in time.
Requirements
-
At least one successful backup of the VM
-
Access to the destination environment (hypervisor or cloud account)
-
Permissions to perform restore operations
Restore workflow
To restore a virtual machine, complete the following workflow:
-
Select the VM and recovery point: Open the VM or VM group, choose a recovery point, and start a restore
-
Choose the restore type: Select a full VM restore and choose whether to restore to the original location or a new location
-
Configure restore settings: Select the destination environment and configure VM settings such as compute, storage, and network
-
Run and validate the restore: Start the restore, monitor the job, and verify that the VM powers on and functions correctly
VM-specific considerations
Restore locations
You can restore VMs:
-
To the original hypervisor
-
To a different hypervisor (cross-platform restore)
-
To a different region or cloud environment
Access node selection
Access nodes handle data movement during restore:
-
Automatic selection is recommended
-
Manual selection is useful for controlled environments
