When HyperScale storage utilization approaches 90%, write operations to the storage pool can begin to fail. To help prevent this, the Commvault software sends alerts to administrators at various utilization thresholds, along with recommended actions. The software also takes proactive measures to prevent cluster failure.
For storage pools owned by a company, alerts are sent to members of the Tenant Admin user group.
For storage pools that are not owned by any company, alerts are sent to members of the CommCell Admin user group.
The following are common recommendations to maintain sufficient free space in HyperScale storage:
-
Perform space reclamation or pruning to free up storage space.
For instructions, see
Performing a Space Reclamation Operation on Deduplicated Data. -
Add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster.
For instructions, see
Expanding Storage Pool.
The alerts function as follows:
|
Storage Utlization |
Alert |
|---|---|
|
70% storage utilization and the storage is expected to be full in next 6 months |
You receive weekly alerts. To maintain sufficient free space, perform a space reclamation operation. If you have already performed a space reclamation job within the past 15 days, add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster. |
|
80% storage utilization |
You receive daily alerts to increase storage capacity. You are notified that write operations to the storage pool—such as backup, auxiliary copy, and synthetic full—are affected when storage utilization exceeds 85%. To maintain sufficient free space, perform space reclamation and add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster. |
|
85% storage utilization |
You receive daily alerts indicating that the storage pool will become read-only starting the following Tuesday. The software automatically stops write operations to the storage pool on that date. To extend write operations for one additional week, acknowledge the risk using the link provided in the alert. You can extend write operations until storage utilization reaches 90%. To allow data protection operations beyond best-practice recommendations, use the Allow backups action available on the Overview tab of the storage pool details page for which you are receiving alerts. To maintain sufficient free space, perform space reclamation and add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster. |
|
90% storage utilization |
You receive a one-time alert indicating that the storage pool has been made read-only and that write operations are no longer allowed. You cannot extend the timeline for write operations beyond this point. To resume write operations, perform space reclamation and add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster. |
For CommCell environments that are upgraded from an earlier release — where this feature was not enabled — to Commvault Platform Release 2024E, the software provides a 6-week grace period starting from the time of upgrade. During this period, alerts are generated, but no automated actions are taken at the 85% or 90% thresholds until the grace period expires.
