Restoring Mailboxes, Mailbox Items, Messages or Public Folders Out of Place Using the Exchange Mailbox Agent

Applies to: User Mailbox, and Journal Mailbox

Note

In case of public folders, all the public folder data can be browsed from the user mailbox subclient level.

By default, data is restored to the client computer from which it originated. This is referred to as an in-place restore. However, you can restore data to a different folder on the same Exchange Mailbox client from which data is backed up, or you can restore data to a different Exchange Mailbox client.

When you restore data to a different Exchange Mailbox client:

  • The source and destination clients must reside in the same CommCell environment.

  • The destination client must have the agent located on it.

  • If a folder is selected as the out-of-place destination, and only a few messages are selected in the source folder then those messages are directly restored in destination folder. If the complete folder is selected then the complete source folder hierarchy is restored under selected destination folder.

When you perform an out-of-place restore, the restored data inherits the rights (that is, permissions) of the parent directory.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Console, expand Client Computers > client > agent > set.

  2. On the Content tab, right-click the subclient, and then click Browse and Restore.

The Browse and Restore dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.

  4. In the left pane of the Client Browse window, expand the set.

  5. Select a message, a mailbox item or a public folder from the right pane.

  6. Click Recover All Selected.

The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

  7. Select To Mailbox.

  8. Define where the messages are restored by doing one of the following:

    • If you want to restore to a different folder on the same client, clear the Restore to Same Folder check box, and then type the destination path.

    • If you want to restore to a different Exchange Mailbox client, from the Destination client list, select the name of the appropriate client.

  9. Click OK.
