Agentless Restores for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Agentless restores can be used to restore small files and folders into a virtual machine without installing an agent on the destination client. Using this option simplifies deployment and reduces the impact of backup and restore operations for virtual machines that do not have high transaction rates and large data requirements. This option is preferred in cases where the CommServe computer or MediaAgent is not able to communicate with the VM (for example, in a restricted network).

Note

Restoring files and folders that have names contain special characters such as quotation marks ("), back ticks (`), single quotes ('), dollar signs ($) and percentage signs (%) is not supported, as these are interpreted differently by the OCI command line interface. If you have files and folders that contain these special characters, use agent based restores instead. See Restoring Guest Files and Folders for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Agentless Restore Process

To perform an agentless restore, Commvault uses the following process:

  1. The selected files are staged on the selected access node.

  2. The user selects files and then uploads them to the OCI bucket from the access node. The user can also provide a bucket of their choice via the OCIBucketForGuestFileRestore addition setting. This bucket should exist in the same region as the destination OCI instance. Otherwise, a temporary bucket called _GX_Bucket_Temporary will be created and used if it doesn't already exist in the region.

  3. Files uploaded to the OCI bucket are downloaded to the destination OCI instance, one file at a time, through scripts using instance agent commands.

  4. Staged files (from Step 1, above) are cleaned up from the selected access node.
