Epic Solution

The Epic electronic health record system (EHR) is a single-database EHR for the healthcare industry, serving mid-size and large medical groups, hospitals, and integrated healthcare organizations. Epic EHR systems use a central Intersystems Caché database to manage all patient records and transactions, with secondary reporting databases and presentation servers. The Commvault Epic Solution uses the IntelliSnap technology to take a point-in-time snapshot of the data volume with the database in a fully quiesced state. The software can then automatically create and mount database clones that are used for testing and reporting without any impact on the InterSystems Caché databases. The Epic Solution provides full-system backup and restore capabilities for all remaining servers in the Epic environment in the manner that Epic recommends in the Epic Business Continuity Technical Solutions Guide.

Solution Overview

The Epic Solution includes the following server types:

  1. Servers that run the InterSystems Caché databases

  2. Servers that run the Epic Clarity Reporting Application

  3. Servers that run other applications the give users access to Epic

You must back up the following data:

  1. Caché database

  2. Caché database journal files

  3. Caché database server root volume and system state

  4. Epic Clarity Reporting Application data

  5. Epic file system data, root volume and system state

InterSystems Caché Database

The scope of the solution is the physical and virtual servers that host the InterSystems Caché databases and contain volumes that can be snapped at the hardware level.

The Epic Solution protects the InterSystems Caché database in a consistent manner. The InterSystems Caché database runs on a server that normally contains drives for the following data:

  • databases

  • journal files

You can use the UNIX File System Agent or Virtual Server Agent to back up the data.

Epic Clarity Reporting Application Data

The Epic Clarity Reporting Application runs SQL or Oracle.

You can use the SQL or Oracle agent to back up the Epic Clarity Reporting Application data.

Epic File System Protection

For all other servers (those that do not contain an InterSystems Caché database or Epic Clarity Reporting Application) and components in the Epic system, you can use the Virtual Server Agent or install the File System Agent and then configure a subclient with the root volume and system state. You can use the Commvault 1-Touch feature for backup and recovery operations.
