Creating a Virtualization Client

Create a virtualization client to manage backup and restore operations for a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) project.

To perform backup operations, each virtualization client can include multiple proxies where the Virtual Server Agent is installed. The virtualization client also enables proxy teaming, enabling proxy failovers for fault tolerant backups. Using multiple proxies for each virtualization client makes it possible to perform backups for a large number of instances in a limited backup window.

When you create a virtualization client, the Commvault software automatically creates an instance, a backup set, and a default subclient that can be used to protect all instances. You can create additional subclients to perform separate protection operations for different groups of instances.

Before You Begin

  • To back up and restore GCP instances, you must create a GCP service account, and then copy the provided private key (P12) file to each VSA proxy (access node).

For more information, see Creating a Google Cloud Platform Service Account.

  • Install the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) on a dedicated instance (proxy) for each GCP project. You can install the VSA on other instances to create one or more additional proxies for the GCP project.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click Client Computers, point to New Client > Virtualization, and then click Google Cloud.

The Create Google Cloud Client dialog box is displayed.

  2. Provide the following information:

    • Client Name: Enter a descriptive name for the Google Cloud service account.

    • Service Account ID: Enter the service account ID.

    • Project ID: Enter the project ID.

    • P12 Key Filename: Enter the file name for the P12 private key.

    • Private Key's Password: Enter the password for the private key.

    • Confirm Private Key's Password: Re-enter the password for the private key.

  3. From the Storage Policy list, select a storage policy to associate with the virtualization client.

The storage policy you select is also associated with the default subclient that is created automatically for the virtualization client.

  4. Click Add to identify VSA proxies that can perform backups for the client.

  5. In the Select Clients / Client Groups dialog box:

  6. Select one or more proxies from the Exclude list. Add all VSA proxies that are on instances in the same service account. Only proxies that match the type of the virtualization client are displayed.

The list displays all the clients that have the Virtual Server Agent installed and all the client groups. You can select one or more clients or client groups. When you select a client group, ensure that at least one client in the group has the Virtual Server Agent installed.

The first proxy for a client acts as a coordinator to allocate jobs to other proxies.

    1. Click Include or Include All and then click OK.
  7. Click OK.

Creating a virtualization client automatically creates a Google Cloud instance, default backup set, and default subclient.
