Retention Options for OnePass - Job-Based Retention

You can archive data to disk, tape, or cloud libraries. Archived data is retained based on the days- or cycles-based retention configured on the storage policy copy.

Before You Begin

  • Synthetic full backups are not supported with this option. Do not configure full or synthetic full backup schedules; only incremental backup schedules are honored.
  • An archive capacity license is consumed when you perform full and incremental backups. The data aging job ages data that meets the job-based retention criteria of the storage policy and releases the capacity license.
  • If you are performing a restore operation by selecting the Restore data instead of stub option, enable the Skip errors and continue option in the Advanced Restore Options dialog box. When you enable this option, data is restored for files with valid data version and stubs are restored for files whose data version is aged.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > File System > backup_set.
  2. Right-click the subclient for which you want to modify retention options, and then click Properties.

The Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

  3. In the Subclient Name box, type a name.
  4. On the Content tab, click Browse to select the directory or file that you want to back up, and then click Add.
  5. Repeat this step to include all the files and directories that you want to backup.

Do not create subclients configured for backup and archiving with overlapping content in the same backup set.

  6. On the Disk Cleanup tab, select the Enable archiving with these rules check box and configure archiving rules. For more information, see Configuring Rules for Archiving.
  7. Click Advanced.

The Advanced Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

  8. On the Retention tab, specify the retention criteria, select the Extend storage policy retention check box.
  9. In the Retention Mode list, click Job Based Retention.

    A confirmation box appears.

  10. Type Confirm in the confirmation box and click OK.

The Backup files that qualify for archiving check box on the Content tab is selected automatically.

  11. Choose one of the following options:
    • Retain Jobs for n years, n months, and n days

When you select this option, the default value is set to 5 years. However, you can modify the value based on your requirements. Between storage policy copy retention and the job-based retention value, the retention that retains items for the longest period takes precedence. Retention is only considered for copies that contain the job.

If you specify storage policy copy retention as x days and y cycles, then the Commvault software compares the x days to the number of days you specify for Job-Based Retention and keeps the items for the longest number of days specified.

      Example 1:

Set the Retain Jobs for n years, n months, and n days to 0 years, 1 month, 20 days. There are  2 storage policy copies (A and B) and both copies contain the archive jobs. The retention of A and B is as follows:

      • A: 45 days 3 cycles
      • B: 17 days 4 cycles

Since the job-based retention has a longer retention period than the storage policy retention, the archive jobs will be available for 50 days.

      Example 2:

Set the Retain Jobs for n years, n months, and n days to 0 years, 0 month, 15 days. There are  2 storage policy copies (A and B) and both copies contain the archive jobs. The retention of A and B is as follows:

      • A: 45 days 3 cycles
      • B: 17 days 4 cycles

Since copy A has a longer retention period than copy B and the subclient retention value, the archive jobs will be available for 45 days.

      Example 3:

Set the Retain Jobs for n years, n months, and n days to 0 years, 0 month, 25 days. There are  3 storage policy copies (A, B, and C). The retention of A, B, and C is as follows:

      • A: 45 days 3 cycles
      • B: 17 days 4 cycles
      • C: 91 days 2 cycles

Only copies A and B contain the archive job. Since archive jobs were not scheduled, Copy C does not contain the archive job. Copy A has a longer retention time period than copy B and than the subclient job-based retention options. Thus, the archive jobs will be available for 45 days.

    • Retain Jobs Indefinitely

This is the default option. When you select this option, jobs in the storage media are never pruned.

  12. Click OK.
