Configuring Preview Settings for Search Engines

Content indexing previews are copies of content indexed data in HTML format. Previews allow users to view the contents of data within search interfaces, such as Compliance Search, without having to restore the original data. You can configure content indexing previews to be created during content indexing jobs or on-demand when a user requests to view data from a search interface.

Note: By default, previews are not generated during content indexing jobs. If you want to generate previews during content indexing jobs, follow this procedure to configure the setting.

Creating Previews During Content Indexing Jobs

When previews are configured to be created during content indexing, an HTML copy of each item in the content indexing job is created and stored on the Search Engine. When a user clicks an item from a search interface, the preview stored on the Search Engine is sent to the search interface. This configuration results in faster previews from search interfaces, but consumes resources on the Search Engine and increases the amount of time it takes content indexing jobs to complete.

Creating Previews On-Demand

When previews are configured to be created on-demand, no previews are created during content indexing jobs. Instead, whenever a user clicks an item from a search interface, the data is temporarily restored from backup media to the Search Engine where an HTML preview is created and then sent to the search interface. This configuration increases the amount of time it takes for previews to appear in the search interface, but decreases the space consumed by previews on the Search Engine index and decreases the amount of time it takes for content indexing jobs to complete.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, click Storage Resources > Search Engines.
  2. Right-click the Search Engine name and then click Properties.
  3. In the Server Config tab, configure previews as follows:
    • To create previews during content indexing jobs, select Generate Previews.
    • To create previews on-demand, clear Generate Previews.

Note: This configuration will only apply to data that is content indexed using this Search Engine.

  4. Click OK.

Services on the Search Engine nodes are restarted automatically.
