Automatic Schedules

Automatic Schedules Changed to Continuous Schedules

After upgrading to the latest service pack all the Automatic Copy schedules will convert to Continuous schedules. By default, these continuous schedules will run every 30 minutes. However, you can configure different time interval as well.

SP17

Auxiliary Copy

Number of Jobs selected for Auxiliary Copy

After upgrading to the latest service pack, by default the Job Selection option on the Auxiliary Copy Advanced - Scalable Resource Allocation tab is enabled and the backup jobs will be processed in batches of 1000 jobs.

Previously, by default the option was not enabled and the backup jobs were processed in batches of 100 jobs.

SP17

Auxiliary Copy

On upgrading to the latest service pack, all auxiliary copy schedules are converted to use the Scalable Resource Allocation option. If the schedule or the schedule policy has a V10 MediaAgent, then that schedule or schedule policy is not converted to use the Scalable Resource Allocation option. However, if you have a V10 MediaAgent and a user creates a schedule or a schedule policy with the Scalable Resource Allocation option enabled, then the system will not honor this auxiliary copy optimization option.

Also, if you disable Scalable Resource Allocation option manually, the system will automatically reset it as enabled.

Previously, the Scalable Resource Allocation option had to be manually selected for the auxiliary copy schedules.

SP17

Virtual Server Agent

For SP17 and more recent service packs, after you install the Virtual Server Agent on a Linux machine and start services, the software checks to see whether Mono is installed and, if necessary, installs the required version of the Mono package. You do not need to install the Mono package manually.

This change applies to Linux proxy support for Amazon, Azure, and VMware.

SP17

Commvault

Backups of VMware virtual machines exclude blocks that are not used by volumes in virtual machine disks (VMDKs).

Excluding unused blocks provides the following benefits:

  • Faster backups
  • Lower space requirements for storage libraries
  • No backups of obsolete data

This feature is enabled by default for NTFS volumes on basic disks for Windows VMs, for backups that use a VSA proxy that runs on Windows or Linux. Disks can use master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partitioning.

If necessary, you can disable this feature using the bDetectVolUnusedSectors additional setting.

SP17

Command Center

File indexing for virtual machines and global search are limited availability features. With Service Pack 15 and more recent service packs, you can enable this feature in the Command Center for Windows guest VMs on the following hypervisors:

  • Amazon Web Services streaming and IntelliSnap backups
  • Microsoft Azure IntelliSnap backups
  • VMware streaming backups

To get more information and enable this capability, contact Products@commvault.com.

SP17

Command Center

Replication targets and life cycle policies are replaced by recovery targets.

SP15

VM-Centric Operations for VMware

Prior to SP15, deleting VMs from the vCenter also de-configured VM clients in the CommCell Console, causing IntelliSnap backup copy operations to fail. With SP15 and more recent service packs, VM clients are de-configured only after the period specified in the Number of days to keep deleted VMs setting for Media Management/Data Aging (defaults to 30 days). Ensure that backup copy jobs complete before the VM client is de-configured.
